Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? You're not the only one! See how we've answered the most common questions.

1How long has the Middlesex School of Complementary Medicine been operating?
We were first registered as an ITEC school in 1992 by Lynn Vereenooghe who is still the School Principal and Director of the School. Our foundations do stretch back further than this as some courses were being run by Lynn prior to MSCM being registered with ITEC.
2How long are the courses?
The courses vary in length, depending on what is being studied. We have everything from half day workshops to diploma courses spanning 9 months as well as a number of on-line courses.
3What differences are there between the weekend and the weekday courses?
There is no difference in the course content, but the times may vary. Some of our weekday courses are timed to fit in with school hours to help parents to attend without needing to pay for childcare.
4What is the age range of students on the course? Am I too old?
We take student of any age from 18 upwards although generally speaking we attract students who are in their thirties onwards We have had students qualifying in their late sixties and going on to become wonderful therapists. Age is no barrier!
5What time do the courses start and finish?
Start and finish times vary depending on the course you attend and its location and numbers. Most of our one-day courses begin at 10.00am and finish at either 5:00pm. Classes can and do finish earlier or later depending on size, odd or even student numbers and other factors. Times are approximate and depend on how many students are booked onto a course. We cannot be held responsible for any missed travel arrangements due to a class finishing slightly later or earlier than planned.
6How many students are there usually in a class?
Class sizes are limited to ensure classes are relaxed, personal and accommodate individual needs.
7Where do you hold your courses and workshops?
We offer courses in two different locations in Northwest London in Northwood and Ruislip Manor. Please note that not all courses are available at each location. Please check out our venue information here. We also offer on location training in your own premises as well as Distance Learning courses in some subjects.
8Is it possible to hold classes on our chosen venue?
If you find it difficult to travel to our location for any reason, we are happy to arrange training that will suit you in the comfort and convenience of your own premise. This is a practical choice if you have several staff members or a group of therapists to train. For more details click here.
9Travel and Accommodation
We have a lot of students who travel to us from all over the country and abroad. If you are travelling a long distance and need to stay over please let us know and we can suggest some places to stay within the area.
10What happens on a Taster Day?
The Taster Days give you a chance to come in and meet us, try out some hands-on massage or reflexology, ask questions and gather more information about the courses. We hope you will find the days important and useful, we also hope that you get some idea of the sorts of people involved in the training and whom you might meet if you take one of the courses. One of the joys of training in this field is meeting and working alongside so many like-minded people. Students often make friends for life on our courses. For more details click here.

15Is there any support for those who haven’t studied for a long time?
Many of our students are coming back to study after a long break from study, and we understand that this can be quite daunting. You will find lots of support and help here at the MSCM, both when you start and throughout your training - we are committed to supporting you to succeed in completing our courses. All our tutors are supportive and willing to help and our doors are always open.
16Why is it important to have an accredited qualification?
The most obvious advantage of accredited over non-accredited qualifications is that the accredited ones provide a guarantee of quality of both the qualification programme and the awarding body that offers accredited qualifications. Non-accredited qualifications, on the other hand, are not regulated and there is no guarantee that they meet appropriate standards. There is no way to tell whether they are fit for their purpose, if they include relevant content or if appropriate methodology for assessment is used.
17What is CPD?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It refers to the process of tracking and documenting the skills, knowledge and experience that you gain both formally and informally as you work, beyond any initial training. It's a record of what you experience, learn and then apply. CPD can be further defined as a range of activities through which professional therapists maintain and develop their skills to ensure that they retain their capacity to practise safely, effectively and legally, within their scope of practice. In simple terms, CPD is any activity that refreshes or develops your therapy skills and knowledge. The purpose of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is to encourage continued lifelong learning and professional growth. CPD is generally an ongoing requirement within most health professions, to undertake education, maintain a current knowledge base and improve skills and knowledge.
18What are CPD Points?
MSCM is committed to CPD as a valuable tool to assist in maintaining and improving the competence of Therapists, thereby enhancing the level of the profession and helping to safeguard the health and safety of members of the public who engage in complementary therapies. All our courses for therapists have been awarded CPD points (Continuing Professional Development) and these points will be shown on the certificates received for each course or workshop. Most professional bodies will require proof that a set amount of CPD has been completed each year in order for membership to be maintained and to ensure that members are up to date with knowledge and training.
19What happens if I cannot make my course?
Deposits and course payments are non-refundable, courses maybe transferable subject to conditions – please check with us. Failure to attend a confirmed course will result in the loss of all payments made for that course. In the event of a genuine reason for cancellation (proof of which may be required) a request for transfer to a later course will be considered at the discretion of MSCM. If the request is successful an administration fee of £25.00 (including VAT) per course will be charged.
20What if I am late for a course?
If you know you are running late then please contact your tutor and inform them using the contact details on the confirmation email they send out when you book. Please do not email the office especially at weekends as it is only manned during the week. Classes are not held up to wait for latecomers so please allow enough time for your journey.
21What if I need a duplicate or replacement MSCM certificate?
Certificates can be replaced. There is a fee of £15.00 (Including VAT) per certificate to cover the administrative and postage costs or £10.00 (including VAT) per certificate for a pdf certificate sent by email. Payment is made at the time or ordering your certificate.

The General Data Protection Regulation GDPR is European Parliament legislation that'll be introduced in the UK on the 25th May 2018.
