Volunteers apply to be on the register by completing and submitting their details here on our website.

The information entered is name : town : postcode : contact number : contact email and preferred therapies. These details are then added to our register. The register is only made available to MSCM students and is not shared externally to any third parties.

Students search the register for volunteers in their area and make contact either by email or phone. The therapists will introduce themselves and explain what therapy they are offering. Volunteers can then decide if they want to work with the student therapist and receive a number of treatments. If they are happy to go ahead then arrangements are made for the first appointment.

The student therapists are required to complete a consultation on the first visit and write it up. This will include questions such as age, occupation, any underlying medical condition, details of any therapies currently undergoing, have had any surgery within the past 3 months, or are being treated for a recent injury. It will allow the therapist to assess if it is safe to proceed and to tailor their treatment to suit the needs of the volunteer. They will then carry out a treatment which they also write up. This is followed by a number of other sessions and each treatment and the associated outcomes are also written up. These are then presented to MSCM for marking and then to the examiner on the day of their final exam.  Any personal details which can identify the volunteer are not included in the case study documentation, so it is completely anonymous.

Completing these case studies is invaluable to the student therapists to put into practice all they have learnt in class in a clinical setting and to fine-tune their skills.

Oncology Massage and Oncology Reflexology Volunteers We also run an Oncology Massage Course and an Oncology Reflexology Course which we require volunteers for. Because of the nature of the course, it is essential that volunteers for this course have a history of cancer. If this is applicable to you, then please state in your volunteer application as detailed above.

Please note:

• We look for reliable candidates and if there is a habit of cancellations we will remove your name from the volunteers list. Please remember your role is very important and your commitment to a confirmed booking is imperative. If a student therapist contacts you please do not agree to be a case study unless you believe you can attend the necessary number of treatments in the given time frame. This will be explained by the therapist at the time of contact.
• We cannot guarantee you will be picked from the list as we have students who travel from far and wide to train with us and we may not have anyone in your vicinity on our courses.
• MSCM cannot be held responsible for any actions carried out by the therapists. However, all our students are insured to practice as student therapists and if you have any concerns you would be most welcome to contact us to discuss on 0208-429-2895.
