Make Herbal Tonics for Winter Wellbeing

A budget-friendly way to look after adults and children throughout the winter. Learn to easily make tasty, antiviral, antibacterial, immune-boosting tonics with herbs such as elderberry, rosehips, raspberries, thyme, rosemary, sage, cinnamon, ginger, onion etc.

This practical class will demonstrate how to use dried or fresh herbs to make cough syrup, oxymels, infused vinegars, cordial, tinctures, glycerites, decoctions, medicinal tea, a gargle to ease sore throats, herbal steam to clear sinuses etc. Includes sugar-free, alcohol-free and vegan options.

You do not need to be able to grow or forage these herbs: these practical recipes can be easily made from dried herbs bought from recommended herbal suppliers. Some can even be purchased from supermarkets: we will make some very effective and convenient ‘supermarket medicines’. Making these home remedies costs a fraction of buying immune tonics from the shops. They also taste much better too, and can easily be adapted to suit your palate so that you take a medicine that you actually enjoy!

In this class we will make tonics to prepare you for common winter ailments: coughs, colds, sore throats, ear ache etc. The tonics can be taken as preventatives or the dosage increased to help to fight off these viruses more quickly. Knowing how to rustle up one of these treatments can so often spare people having to go and get an antibiotic. Truly these are great home-medicine making skills to have for life. Vivienne thinks that everyone should know them!

In this class we will also discuss recovering immunity, health and vitality where people have become run-down e.g. from stress, recurrent use of antibiotics etc. as well as when people may need professional medical support.

During our class:  Try out tonics and treatments on the day.

Bring home:

  • Samples of some of the herbal extracts that we make in the class.
  • A printed booklet containing info about each herb, herbal medicine-making instructions, dosage guidelines (for children & adults) and safety info (including when it is recommended to consult a qualified practitioner for deeper clinical treatment).

Ask your tutor: Your questions! Vivienne is a professional herbalist with nearly 25 years’ experience treating people in herbal medicine clinics. She has treated many adults, children, babies and pregnant or breast-feeding ladies. Whatever symptoms or changes are bothering you, Vivienne is likely to understand and have practical recommendations for suitable help.
